Product Spotlight: Pre-Release Anker PowerHouse
This off-grid power supply is a great option for your camping, road trip and emergency needs. Anker packed in 400Wh/120,000mAh of power into this compact and sturdy design that weighs in at 9.3 pounds. Anker says, "PowerHouse is our premier portable power supply solution, built using only premium components and the most advanced power management technology." After testing it out for a few days, here are some of my thoughts.
How a products feels is how it performs. Now this is not always true but it is a big deal for me. If something feels cheap and plastic I suspect it will break or not function to the fullest extent. When I pulled it out the box I immediately felt the solid structure of the handle and an encasing that felt sturdy. Anker says it is made out of a "drop-tested aluminum shell". It has enough weight to it that it feels like quality but not so much that it is overbearing. My wife was able to easily carry it without complaining about the weight or basic ergonomics.
The handle swivels to the carrying position but also tucks behind when not in use. It is not removable though. It has a rubber grip on the bottom half of the handle which is a key feature if it is being carried for long distances.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to operate it. With just a click of a small button above the charging port you want to use, it is ready to go. As I type this blog, I have my computer plugged into the Anker AC outlet and it powers my 15 inch Macbook Pro perfectly. It is completely silent when in operation and remains cool when charging. The PowerHouse also has the ability to charge more than one device at a time which is a convenient feature when traveling with friends! It may seem a little excessive to have this much power at your fingertips, but having the ability to not have to find power for days allows to you truly get "off the grid" or make it through an emergency due to storms. It takes roughly 10 hours to recharge the device on a wall outlet and it will soon be able to be recharged through an Anker Solar Panel!
The display is easy to ready and crisp from any angle. It is an aqua blue color and let's you quickly see what is being charged and where the power supply is currently at on the PowerHouse. It is very readable but I did not test it in direct sunlight. Some say the display is too simple and needs to have more readouts but from my early interaction with it, the display seems to function well.
Anker is entering into a competitive market with this product but I think this is going to make a pretty big splash once it hits consumer markets. It is packed with a lot of power while remaining lightweight which makes it a great portable power option. Priced at $499, it is not necessarily cheap but for what you are getting it makes sense if you were considering a product like this!
