NEW 2016 BioLite CookStove
BioLite is not only an outdoor product company, they are helping people live a safer, more enjoyable life around the world with each purchase. They are tackling a real issue of in-home cooking globally and the dangers that are associated with an open wood-burning stove (carbon Monoxide, smoke inhalation, etc). I have seen these dangers first hand internationally and the smoke produced from many primitive stoves fill a small space/home with smoke and chokes the air.
BioLite’s products reflect the innovation that they are bringing to developing countries. I was sent their brand new CookStove from the new 2016 line to give a first look at the product and how it functions.
If you are not familiar with their stoves, the differentiating factor is that they do not run off of any sort of gas as in the case of most portable camp stoves. This is run strictly off of small sticks, twigs, pinecones and other “natural” burners that can be found around your campsite. Through the integration of a small fan for better combustion, this could potentially be a companion or complete replacement for your gas powered portable camp stove.
At first look, I am impressed with the overall design and even the packaging. This piece of equipment feels quality and has enough weight to it that it feels sturdy but not so much that it feels heavy. After tearing into the packing and unpacking all the components I quickly understood how it went together without even having to reference the included directions. Everything was very self-explanatory and “made sense” quickly. The battery-powered fan easily attaches to the stove and when the legs are fully flipped out, it has a very secure fit with barely any wiggle room.
The legs are folded nicely under the stove and also feel sturdy when extended. The one leg “traps” the bottom portion of the battery-powered fan and secures it in place so that it does not slip out. At this point, my fan came with a partial charge and I fired it right up with a press of the button. The left LED lights indicate where the charge level is at and the right lights show you which fan speed level you are on. The lower the level, the longer the battery lasts. To turn the fan off completely all that is needed is to hold the button in for three second and it turns right off.
The CookStove itself is wrapped in a metal mesh to avoid extreme heat from being accidently touched on the exterior. Inside the stove you can see (and feel when on) the air vents to allow ventilation throughout the whole interior. The collapsible legs are easy to store and require no unlocking or locking. They are stiff enough to stay open when you pick it up or stay closed when storing it. The battery-powered fan also fits inside the stove itself for easy storage.
Also, included is a charging cable for the fan, fire starters and a storage bag.
Starting it up was easy but did require the included fire-starter sticks. I am not sure how you would start it without some sort of fire starter but with one it was not hard. I started the fire off with the fan on low and then steadily increased speeds as the fire built up. When the fan was on high the heat was intense and the flames were very consistent. I used a GSI pot and boiled water on it. It took roughly 7 minutes to boil but I wasn’t building the fire while it was heating up, which I believe could have cut the boil time by 2 or 3 minutes.
It was fun to have the whole family involved in finding small sticks and twigs to use to burn in the stove.
Even when there are flames, you can pick up the stove by the battery pack and move it to your desired location. After the first burn the inside is discolored due to the flames but no structural damage at all. I am excited to continue using this product!
