Field Notes "Expedition" Edition
I have been looking in to getting a notebook that is waterproof for a long time and finally got one! The reason I wanted to try one out is because I feel like some of my best ideas come in the shower! :) I thought it would also be cool to take with me whenever I'm not sure whatever environment I'm headed to!
After trying it out the first time in the shower, I have some more trial runs to do. I was using a very basic ball-point pen and got the notebook completely drenched in water and soap. When the water was completely on the paper, I did find it tough to write. When it was more or less a splash of water, it seemed to write decent. Field Notes sells a pen that is made specifically for waterproof writing scenarios that I assume would work much better. They do advise you to not use a pen that lays down a lot of ink because it will wash away quickly.
When using it in the shower (or I would assume a wet environment), it isn't for your long journal entries. I can see the use being mainly for quick thoughts to jot down that I don't want to forget.
Field Notes says this about the paper it uses in this notebook: "It’s maybe not even fair to call it paper. The whole book is printed on Yupo Synthetic paper, an amazing water- and tear-proof paper extruded from polypropylene pellets in Chesapeake, Virginia."
I can see this notebook being useful but only time will tell if it is just a novelty item. The overall quality seems high and the design is in line with its other products. For the price, it's worth a shot.
